History of an ancient city Patna, India


Patna, capital of Bihar is one of the ancient glorious cities of India. The city’s name has been changed several times from the historical periods. Magadha King Ajatashatru built a small fort on the banks of the River Ganges in around 600BC and names the place as Patligram, which is now called Patna. The debris part of the fort can be found in Patna today also. The city is very fertile as it’s situated on the bank of Ganges. The area is considered not only as one of the main agricultural sectors but also a major trading center of the country.

Some important places of Patna:-

Martyrs' Memorial: The memorial is located exactly outside the Secretariat building in Patna. It is a life size stone statue of the seven courageous martyrs, who forfeited their lives during Quit India Movement in 1942.

Patna Museum: This historic museum comprises metal and stone statues, ancient ceramic sculptures, households, weapons from Mauryan and Gupta age. Some weapons of First World War also can be seen here. Many people visit this museum to see the remains of a 16 meter tall tree.

Pathar ki Masjid and Sher Shah Suri's Masjid: This beautiful mosque is located on the bank of river Ganges. Parvez Shah, son of Mughal emperor Jahangir, founded this Masjid in 1621. The structure is built of stone, and there it’s name as Pathar Ki Masjid. Sher Shah Suri's Masjid - The mosque was built by Sher Shah Suri in 1545. This Afghan style architectural beauty is also known as Shershahi.

Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Library: This nationally famous library has a collection of 5,000,000 old and new books which includes handwritten books in Arabic and Persian language, books on Rajput and Mughal paintings, and a 25 mm thick hand written Koran by Córdoba University. The library is located on Ashok Rajpath. It was started by Khan Bahadur Khuda Bakhsh in 1891with 4,000 manuscripts.

Sadaquat Ashram: It is the retirement home of India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Since its establishment, it is the national headquarters of Bihar Vidyapeeth University.

Agam Kuan: Agam Kuan is a very popular historic archaeological site in Patna. It is located near to Gulzar bagh Railway Station and is widely known as ‘unfathomable well’ since the period of Mauryan emperor, Ashoka. The well is circular in shape, creased with brick in the upper 13 meters and has wooden rings in the remaining 19 meters.


Patna Planetarium: Patna Planetarium is Asia's biggest planetarium located on Valley Road. Many visitors prefer to go here.
